Open letter to researchers who use sexy-sounding titles as “hooks” for their articles but don’t follow through with any substance

Dear Researchers:

Please don’t do this.

Your sexy titles are titillating…they seduce me with promises of  OMG WOWIE WHAT A COOL SYSTEM/IDEA/MODEL/RESULT!!!  I am helplessly drawn in, like a moth to a flame.

And them I start to read your article.  And then I KEEP reading because SURELY that sexy stuff is in there somewhere.  SURELY.

But then it isn’t.  Sometimes not at all.  Or maybe the conclusion tosses me a bite of: “well, it COULD have been like that”, or,  “gee, maybe someone ELSE should look into that sexy bit. ‘Cause it’s pretty sexy.”

Then I get irate and run around ranting and flapping the offending article in my labmates’ faces (while ranting) and your article ends up in my “TO SHRED” pile.

I have been out of academic circles for five years. FIVE.  I have a lot of reading to do.  I don’t have time to be sidetracked by misleading title sexiness.

It’s really not a Very Nice Thing To Do.

So cut it out.

Sincerely,

TGIQ
