In the zoology lab I teach, the same question gets asked every week: “so how, um…how do they have sex?” It’s inevitable, really. When you think about it, the vast majority of biologists/ecologists spend a not inconsiderable amount of time thinking about, asking questions about, and researching sex. So it’s no surprise that curious students ask this question over and over again. I now actually make a point of learning the copulatory habits of all the animals my students will examine every week, just to make sure I’m prepared (they now seem to be under the impression that I’m a walking, talking sex dictionary, but whatever. I’ve been called worse.)
I mentioned this to a labmate of mine today, and she said, “Oh, you should show them the Green Porno movies!”
I YouTubed. I died of lols. It’s acclaimed Italian actress Isabella Rossellini, in costume, deadpan, acting out the sexual habits of various animals (including lots of arthropods) with a bunch of terrifically cheezy props. It is MONEY.
So here is Green Porno: Praying Mantis, for your viewing pleasure:
One more, what the heck: Green Porno: Spider
There are a bunch more on there you can look up yourself, if you find these as hilarious as I do.
